A friendly match between Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty and Ukrainian outfit Metallurg Zaporozhye was abandoned after only 36 minutes on Tuesday.
The match was brought to an early ending when Kairat’s Russian midfielder Mikhail Bakaev lost his cool on the pitch.
Things started to unravel for Bakaev after he reacted badly to a tough challenge from a Metallurg opponent. Although the referee awarded the Kairat man a free-kick, Bakaev reacted by putting his head right in the face the Metallurg aggressor.
Bakaev then appeared to give the referee some lip in the aftermath, which resulted in the official drawing the red card from his pocket.
That red card pushed Bakaev over the edge.
After being manhandled by his teammates to get off the pitch, Bakaev turned his anger on the Metallurg coach by pushing him in the face. To make matters worse, he then attempted to attack the referee as he raced back onto the pitch looking determined to punch the official in the face.
Bakaev’s teammates came to his rescue as they made sure the player did not assault the official, but after several minutes of confusion after the event the game was called off.
